I still had two days before I had to start my own patrol. To say I was panicking would be to say the Black Plague killed a few people.

My biggest concern was obvious. If I got caught by the Brotherhood of Eternity while alone, they would serve me to Father Abram with an apple in my mouth. At my disposal, I had a stolen gauntlet, untested fireballs, and a decent-enough right hook. None of those could possibly help me in a real fight against a senior Brother, so I needed to train. Clementine’s combat prowess seemed to be entirely ballet and gusts of wind, so she was out of the question. Johanna and I said maybe three words to each other since I moved in. Also out of the question. Jesse was a tall, muscular man with a giant heart and a penchant for bear hugs. If he tried to teach me to wrestle, I knew exactly what would happen. Extremely out of the question. Using all the courage I had, I walked in on Vee while she was in her secret garden. Joint firmly planted in between her lips and erotica firmly grasped, she peered up from her book with bloodshot eyes.

“I need you to teach me to fight,” I said.

“No.”

“I’ll bake you more brownies.”

“Brownies first.”

Stoned Vee was nicer than regular Vee. Noted. We walked down to the kitchen, and I started my kitchen prep. Vee hopped onto the kitchen island and rested her head on the stovetop.

The joke was on Vee since I could make brownies in my sleep. Melt the butter and baking chocolate, crack the eggs, add the dry ingredients, mix until gooey and decadent. Zack always splashed in extra vanilla. His signature. I put the hand mixer into the chocolate and turned it on low. For her intense aversion to technology, Clementine kept a lot of kitchen gadgets.

“So, what’re you gonna teach me?” I asked, licking a droplet of chocolate off my thumb. “’Cause I was thinking that maybe karate might be something easy, but I saw this documentary about capoeira a few years ago and that might be—”

“Martial arts are a myth,” she snarled. “You think that some gangbanger’s gonna let you do eighteen flips so you can kick him in the face? No! What you gotta do is punch him in the face, then punch him again, then punch him again, until finally his skull concaves.”

“Ew.”

“Yeah, you’ll be saying that when you’re cleaning his brain off your hands!”

When the batter looked even, I poured it into a brownie pan and shoved it into the oven. Vee reached out for the mixing bowl, desperately wanting it but not enough to warrant movement.

“Lemme lick the bowl,” she moaned.

“Careful, Vee, raw eggs are dangerous!” I gasped, pressing my palm against my chest. “What if you die?”

We both broke down laughing. I slid the bowl to Vee, and she went to town on the bowl. The amount of slurping coming out of her mouth was disgusting.
